In 1972, Abe Pollin was granted the right to bring an NHL team to Washington. The rest, as they say, is history. On October 9, 1974, the Capitals played their first game. In 1975, Denis Dupere becomes the first Washington Capital in the NHL All-Star Game. The Caps make their first appearance in the Stanley Cup playoff game in 1983. Years later, in 1998, they make their first appearance in a Stanley Cup Finals game. The current owner, Ted Leonsis, buys the Washington Capitals in 1999, becoming only the second owner of the team in franchise history. In 2004, the Capitals win their 1000th game.
The Capitals have 3 retired numbers. They are:
#7- Yvon Labre- retired 1997
#5- Rod Langway- retired 1981
#32- Dale Hunter- retired 2000
The current general manager is George McPhee, the head coach, Bruce Boudreau, and the owner, Ted Leonsis. This year, Alex Ovechkin became the 1st NHL player in 12 years to score 60 goals in one season, eclipsing Dennis Maruk.
